This project aims to study the habitat use of the Chilean dolphin (Cephalorhynchus eutropia), the only cetacean species endemic to Chile. This population, located in the Gulf of Arauco, faces increasing pressures from pollution, vessel traffic, and artisanal fishing. Despite its ecological importance, little is known about its local distribution or the threats it faces in this region.

Through a series of boat-based surveys conducted twice a month, the project will apply photo-identification techniques to recognize individual dolphins, analyze their habitat use, and generate spatial maps. The collected data will provide the first comprehensive baseline for this population, identifying critical areas within Caleta Llico that are essential for its conservation.

Beyond research, the project seeks to engage the local community by training volunteers and fishers in dolphin monitoring, offering educational workshops, and promoting science communication through social media and local schools. These activities will encourage participation and environmental awareness, helping to bridge science and community stewardship.

The findings will support future marine spatial planning and local conservation strategies, and will be disseminated through public talks, scientific publications, and media coverage. By integrating field research, environmental education, and citizen science, By-Watch aims to strengthen local capacity for marine conservation and promote sustainable coexistence between human activities and marine biodiversity in the Gulf of Arauco.
