From Whaling to Whale-Watching: The Return of the Endangered Sei Whale (Balaenoptera borealis) to the Ex-Whaling Site of Caleta Chome, Central Chile

Caleta Chome (36°40'S; 73°15'W) is a ex whaling site. Since 2014, groups of sei whales have been seen with calves between the spring and autumn seasons. During 2019/20 and 2021/2022 we have made sightings of this species. However, we are far from understanding why they come to this area, why they use this area and if the same individuals return every year.

This project seeks to continue monitoring sei whales in this area and its main objective is to determine the habitat use of the sei whale with greater accuracy using a theodolite.
