MATUMBAWE HAI: Strengthening Effective Governance for Coral Reef Conservation in Pepokibukwa Collaborative Fisheries Management Area (CFMA) in Tanzania
Buyuni Reef located on the southern coast of Tanzania harbours diverse coral species that have attracted a number of tourists, recently the Buyuni local community reserved 500 square meters to be protected as a ‘locally managed marine area’ under local management.
However, there is a lack of capacity to monitor coral reefs in the designated area for strengthening their management. This project aims at establishing community based long-term monitoring of Buyuni coral reefs through local capacity building to enable management-decision making and inform local and global management strategies.
