Cheetahs are difficult to census using traditional methods. They require sophisticated research designs within their hotspots (areas they frequent). One example of such areas is communication hubs. Therefore, this project aims to identify the cheetah's core home range and communication hubs in Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park, deploy camera traps, and use the resulting information to investigate who visits these sites, how frequently they visit, and when they do so. By identifying and monitoring these hubs, we aim to improve understanding of cheetah spatial behaviour, dispersal, and connectivity.
The findings will generate new ecological insights and guide spatial planning, corridor protection, and targeted conservation strategies for cheetahs in north-western Zimbabwe and beyond.
