Programme to Conserve the Urban Biodiversity of Kolkata City with School Students - Phase III

Our project aims to create youth nature leaders in urban areas who will take action for nature conservation and encourage others to do so. We will work with eight hundred middle-school students from sixteen schools in the Indian cities of Kolkata, Siliguri and Delhi.

This project is a part of the Green Rhinos Program of the Association for Social and Environmental Development, which creates youth nature leaders in urban and rural areas of India.

We will work in sixteen urban schools in India, with fifty middle–school students, who have interest in nature conservation, and two mentor teachers . They will be the Green Rhinos teams. Eight of the participating schools will be Kolkata and four each from Siliguri and Delhi. In Siliguri we are partnering with the Himalayan Nature Adventure Foundation. In Delhi, we are collaborating with Partners in Development Initiatives.

The Green Rhinos Program in each school will consist of an initiative of ten months. The Green Rhinos Teams will be oriented on nature around them and the need for nature conservation through a seminar consisting of an audio-visual presentation, interaction and nature games. They will identify and implement a project aimed at nature conservation locally. Five student coordinators, called the Green Rhinos Leaders, will receive leadership training and two teachers from each school will receive mentoring training. The Green Rhinos Leaders will be provided tools to lead a nature conservation project and they will create school-based project/s. After the training, the Green Rhinos Leaders will share the project idea/s with the Team from their school and refine and plan out the project.

The Green Rhinos Team in each school will execute the school project/s in six months. During implementation of the school projects the ASED Project Team will help them to gain access to resources they may need and with networking. After completion of the school projects, the Green Rhinos Teams will submit a project report. All the Green Rhinos Leaders and eighty Green Rhinos will be administered a Knowledge, Attitude, Behaviour and Practice questionnaire at the start and end of the project to gauge outcome. Sharing Workshops will be held in New Delhi, Kolkata and Siliguri with the Green Rhinos Leaders and mentor teachers. Representatives from relevant Government departments, environmental organizations and media will be invited. All Green Rhinos will receive a badge at the start of the Project and a certificate on completion. Project findings will be shared with relevant Government Departments and organizations working on nature conservation with youth.
