Scaphyglottis is a genus of neotropical orchids with 78 species, but its species identity remains unclear due to numerous species complexes. Existing phylogenies define it as monophyletic, but many clades have polytomies or low support. This study aims to reconstruct the evolutionary and biogeographical history of Scaphyglottis using a phylogenetic approach.

The project will sample species across the genus's entire distribution and employ ddRADseq technology for sequencing. The goal is to generate a robust phylogeny, identify synapomorphic characters to refine taxonomy, and outline the genus's evolutionary history, which is important for its conservation. In addition, the project will include an expedition to the Pico da Neblina National Park (Amazonas, Brazil), with the participation and support of indigenous Yanomami, with the aim of collecting data in remote areas and strengthening collaboration with traditional communities.
