Community Involvement and Empowerment in the Conservation of Marine Turtles in Two Coastal Districts of Ghana

The coastal beaches are faced with a number of environmental challenges which tend to affect the ecological integrity of coastal zones with adverse effect on the eco-tourism potentials and livelihoods and this project seeks to involve the coastal communities the main stakeholders in addressing these challenges to enhance sustainable development.

The project will involve all the relevant stakeholders such as wildlife division, fisheries department, District assemblies and Torudes as facilitation organisation.

The project activities include the community advocacy on turtle conservation, marine turtle monitoring, refresher training for the community turtle protection volunteers, release of accidental catches from the fishing nets and communal beach cleaning promoted and institutionalized.
