Borgor Point on the Liberian coast is a major nesting area for several species of turtles but there is high morality due to hunting and fishing practices. This project will work with the community to address the threats to these turtles.
Borgor Point is a community in south eastern Liberia with an estimated population of 2,000 people, most of whom are hunters, fishermen and subsistence farmers. It is a major nesting habitat for sea turtles - Leatherback and Olive Ridley, and possibly Eretmochelys imbricata. However, there is a very high morality rate amongst these turtles due to hunting by residentsand intense pelagic fishing practices on the high sea.
The Borgor Sea Turtle Monitoring Conservation program will work with residents of the community to address the threats to these turtles especially the nesting females and their eggs.
