The Two-Toed Sloth, Colombia

Silvia Alvarez

Density, habitat preference and diet of the Two-Toed Sloth in a mountain forest of Colombia.

None

This team aims to expand current knowledge about the ecology of two toed sloths, a poorly studied neotropical mammal species. Practically no information is known about this animal. It is in danger of disappearing from its habitat which in turn is being destroyed. It is a highly specialised animal for living in the canopy of the neotropical forests thus its survival is closely tied to that of the forested ecosystems. The Andean forests of Colombia support significant human population and associated agricultural activities. The conservation status of the species and the principal threats for its survival are unknown mainly because there are no studies about its populations.

None

The team will study the ecology of the two-toed sloth undertaking various forms of field research. The main objectives will be to estimate population density, to analyse habitat relationships between the animal and to look at its diet. The study will also look at the different states of a native forest and the trees present in each of them.
