Building Regional Knowledge of Understudied Sea-Turtle Populations: Associated with the Humboldt Current

There is a need for innovation of research strategies and our understanding of sea turtle spatial distribution. By monitoring coastal bays in Northern Chile, which are heavily influenced by upwelling and other features of the Humboldt Current System, we aim establishing the regional spatial distribution and seasonal habitat use of these species. We will describe basic population parameters and trophic ecology, and examine the influence of local oceanographic variables, e.g. sea surface temperature, upwelling intensity on these factors. Turtle populations will be surveyed using local artisanal fishing fleets, combined with awareness in the local community.
