Composition, Spatio-Temporal Diversity and Conservation of Birds in a Remote and Isolated Area of the Pantanal Biome (Serra Do Amolar – Corumbá/MS)

We intend to provide the birds inventory of Serra do Amolar and investigate occurrence, abundancy and conservation of the birds species in different habitats and to compare the data between rainfall and dry period. We will estimate the different diversity and the birds moviments in region through the Alpha and Beta diversity parameters. Moreover, contribute to identify migratory/endangered birds species and possible new taxa of Mato Grosso do Sul state or Brazil (for being ecotone and border region). This data will provide subsidies for birds conservancy and habitats in region, further will used for assist the riverside community with ecotourism work in Amolar region, mainly with the practice of birdwatching.

The occurrence and persistence of bird species in different habitats is determined by several factors, including environmental heterogeneity. This factor shapes the composition and structure of the community at the site. Landscapes formed by different phytophysiognomies are believed to be more effective in conserving bird diversity. This is the case of Serra do Amolar, a Pantanal landscape, far from urban agglomerations and strongly isolated by the waters. For this reason, it corresponds to a place of deficit both Linnean and Wallacean, as it does not have systematic studies of occurrence and distribution carried out in its area. Considering this information, the objective of this work is to analyze the spatial dynamics of avifauna in Serra do Amolar / Pantanal, contributing to the knowledge about: the local avifauna composition; dynamics of occupation of different habitats and composition of alpha, beta and gamma diversities.

Still, we intend to know which migratory birds occur in the region and if there are species not yet registered. For this, we will do sampling in two campaigns, in the rainy peak and in the dry peak, collecting data on the richness and abundance of birds in five different phytophysiognomies, through Mackinnon lists and listening points. Data analysis will provide inferences about the spatio-temporal distribution of species, in addition to providing data on the local geographic distribution of several species. It is important to know which species are migrating and / or threatened birds and, therefore, provide data to understand their interactions with the different habits found in the Serra do Amolar complex.

These data will provide information for:

a) mapping species and population distributions. The project will help us to make practical decisions about how to conserve avian diversity that are taken at regional and even local scales.

b) We believe that this project will also attract birdwatchers by providing mapping species and population distributions and preparing the local communities to hold professionally these birdwatchers;

c) The item b will help to provide social and economic imperatives that can dramatically influence conservation goals in the Serra do Amolar. For this reason, this project will integrate the surrounding community into the long-term conservation planning process.
