Identifying the Role of the Galapagos Marine Reserve in the Tunas Population from the Eastern Pacific Ocean

This project provides essential data on yellowfin tuna to support sustainable management. It aims to confirm nursery areas in Ecuador and Colombia, identify spawning areas and seasons, and map larval distribution.

These findings will clarify the role of MPAs, such as the Galápagos and Malpelo, in protecting and rebuilding tuna populations in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. This research is crucial for conservation efforts, as yellowfin tuna remains threatened by overfishing. Without management plans based on biological data, effective conservation cannot be achieved, putting the long-term sustainability of this vital fishery at risk.
