29 Aug 2025 Mount Elgon National Park, Uganda, Africa Amphibians | Communities | Education | Habitats
This project aims to conserve the Critically Endangered Arthroleptides dutoiti (Du Toit’s Torrent Frog) which inhabits montane streams of Mount Elgon in Eastern Uganda, where research on the species has been limited (Jacob & Christopher, 2021). Endemic to this region, the species faces severe threats, including habitat loss, climate change and agricultural encroachment (Ngwava et al., 2021). Local communities, especially the Bagisu and Sabiny, rely heavily on agriculture, leading to habitat destruction and increased human–wildlife conflict.
The project will work with local communities while raising awareness about the importance of conserving Arthroleptides dutoiti and other frog species. Engaging the local population is essential for the species' long-term survival, ensuring the protection of its habitats even after the project ends.
This project will collect detailed data on the population size, distribution, and habitat characteristics of Arthroleptides dutoiti, while raising awareness about its conservation needs. The project aims to: (i) Improve understanding of species distribution and population size, (ii) Strengthen community awareness and engagement in conservation, and (iii) Enhance collaboration with local and national stakeholders.
