Boosting Nationwide Vulture Conservation by Connecting People, Government and Development Projects through Monitoring and Awareness Workshops

This project focuses on the conservation of the critically endangered Slender-billed Vulture (Gyps tenuirostris) in Nepal. It adopts an integrated approach that combines scientific research with local community engagement. Through the use of GPS telemetry, the project tracks vulture movements, feeding, and roosting behaviours to identify key habitats and threats. Community participation is a central component, involving local bird clubs, students, and forest user groups in monitoring, awareness campaigns, and safe carcass management.

The establishment and improvement of science-based feeding sites ensure a continuous supply of drug-free food for vultures, reducing the risk of poisoning from veterinary drugs such as diclofenac. Additionally, the project promotes vulture-based ecotourism, linking conservation with sustainable livelihoods and encouraging local stewardship. Findings from the project support evidence-based conservation policies, awareness programs, and long-term monitoring systems using mobile application , making it a model for community-driven species conservation in Nepal.
