This research aims to assess habitat selection by western chimpanzee in Loma mountain Nation park (L M N P), a crucial area for their conservation and home to the highest density of this subspecies globally. Western chimpanzees are currently facing significant threats, including habitat loss due to deforestation, poaching, disease and climate change. Understanding their habitat preferences is essential for developing effective conservation strategies that can safeguard their future. This project will address several key issues:
Habitat Loss: Rapid deforestation and agricultural expansion pose a severe threat to chimpanzee habitats. This research will focus on identifying critical habitats that are vital for the survival of western chimpanzee, providing essential information for conservation efforts aimed at habitat protection.
Dietary insight: By examining the relationship between tree species distribution and chimpanzee diets, the project seeks to enhance our understanding of their nutritional requirements and foraging behaviour. Gaining insights into their dietary needs is vital for ensuring that chimpanzees can access the resources necessary for their survival.
Ecological understanding: The investigation will delve into the ecological factors that influence habitat selection, offering insight into ecosystem health and the long-term sustainability of chimpanzee populations. Understanding these ecological dynamics is crucial for implementing effect conservation measures.
Additionally, the communities bordering LMNP such as Nedu ,seredu, kania and senikoro rely heavily on the forest for agriculture and non-timber forest products. Engaging these communities is a fundamental aspect of the project. By raising awareness about the importance of western chimpanzee and their habitats, we aim to foster a sense of stewardship and encourage sustainable practices that benefit both wildlife and local livelihoods.
With over two years of experience working in LMNP (2022-2025) with Tacugama, I have been involved in various projects, including tree surveys, camera trap, bus meat survey and community sensitisation initiatives. This background has equipped me with a deep understanding of both the wildlife and human communities in the areas. By leveraging this knowledge, the project aspires to create a comprehensive framework for conserving the western chimpanzee and its habitat, thereby contributing to the broader goal of biodiversity preservation in the region.
