Cameroon is one of the most diverse countries in Africa in terms of freshwater fishes, with approximately 5% of the world’s known species. Among these species, Aphyosemion bamilekorum (Radda, 1971), is found exclusively in restricted habitats within the western region of Cameroon. Previous surveys in Bafounda locality have shown a high fishing encroachment in the local rivers, which has had devasting effects on populations of the targeted species. Classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the species often lives in fast-flowing brooks on the savanna highlands and is threatened by human activities (IUCN, 2009), such as the modification and destruction of its habitat due to population growth in its locality and various forms of pollution, as well as uncontrolled fishing resulting from its heavy exploitation for commercial purposes in the ornamental aquaculture sector.

This proposed project aims to collect the first systematic ecological dataset on the status of Aphyosemion bamilekorum, especially regarding habitat conditions and distribution patterns in its range, through the assessment of its current distribution and structure, evaluation of its habitat conditions, and identification of conservation threats to Aphyosemion bamilekorum.

Field surveys will be conducted across known and potential habitats using standardised sampling techniques, including dip netting and visual encounter surveys. The data gathered from this project will be valuable in guiding actions to improve conservation strategies in Bafounda locality. In particular, data gathered will serve as the baseline for future development of a long-term monitoring programme based on distribution sites. It will also help to establish a land-use and resource-use strategy in the area.

The project will work closely with local communities to assess their knowledge, and jointly develop conservation interventions. In addition, awareness-raising activities will be organised with them on fish conservation in general. Specifically, sensitisation events with fishermen during which talks about fish conservation successes around the world will be organised, will encourage local communities to be the champions of conservation in the Bamenda highlands.
