The Nevis Sea Turtle Conservation project seeks to increase awareness of the need for sea turtle conservation on Nevis and the efforts that are presently been made to protect sea turtles on Nevis. Efforts are to be made to increase community participation in these conservation efforts. This will include getting more fishermen and youths involved in an effort to tag all nesting turtles on the main nesting beaches and to increase the numbers of turtles tagged in the foraging sea turtle survey that is still in its teething stages. It is hoped that through these efforts that the ecotourism potential of sea turtles can be further realised and that there be increased awareness that non-consumptive uses of sea turtles can result in the sustainable use on Nevis and beyond of these endangered creatures.

Student volunteers (youths) will be trained to conduct beach patrols and how to follow the proper protocol in handling nesting sea turtles as well as in nest protection and egg transfer. Volunteers will also receive basic training as tour guides for what is anticipated to be a surge in the ecotourism business as regards taking tourists to observe sea turtles nesting on the beaches of Nevis. This is part of the effort to promote the non-consumptive uses of sea turtles on the island.

In an effort to increase awareness in children of school age a sea turtle camp will be held during the summer. The basics of sea turtle conservation will be taught to children that will be mainly between ages eight and sixteen. This will be held in conjunction with one of the local hotels. A number of quizzes and radio programmes will also highlight the need for sea turtle conservation and give children the opportunity to participate and win prizes.

Additionally, youth and community groups will be afforded the opportunity to visit the nesting beaches to see sea turtles nesting. This is a measure to increase the awareness of the need for sea turtle conservation. Links with the print and electronic media will continue in an effort to continue to increase awareness, especially at times when major events in the sea turtle calendar of events are happening.
