This project aims to assess the population status, threats, and conservation strategies for the Hooded Vulture (Necrosyrtes monachus) in Busaga Forest, located in Muhanga District, Rwanda. Busaga Forest is currently the only confirmed breeding site for this critically endangered species in the country, making it a conservation priority. However, there is limited quantitative information on population size, breeding success, habitat use, and the spatial distribution of threats, which hinders effective conservation planning.
The project will generate robust ecological data to improve understanding of the species’ status and inform conservation strategies. Monthly population surveys will be conducted using standardized methods, including point counts and transects, to estimate abundance and monitor trends over time. Nest monitoring will also be carried out through regular visits to identify active nests, assess breeding success, and document nesting behavior.
To better understand threats, field assessments will be conducted to identify and map activities such as poisoning, habitat disturbance, tree cutting, and other human-
induced pressures. These threats will be geo-referenced to produce a spatial threat
map for targeted conservation action. In addition, structured questionnaire surveys
will be administered to approximately 100 households in communities surrounding
Busaga Forest to capture local knowledge, perceptions, and practices that may impact
vulture conservation.
Community engagement is a key component of the project and will focus on four
sectors bordering the forest: Rongi, Nyamabuye, Kibangu, and Shyogwe. Awareness
activities, including stakeholder workshops, school sensitization sessions, and radio
programs, will be conducted to promote understanding of the ecological importance
of vultures and encourage community participation in conservation efforts.
Mechanisms for reporting threats will also be introduced to support ongoing
monitoring.
By combining ecological research with community-based approaches, this project will
provide critical data on the population and ecology of Hooded Vultures in Busaga
Forest while promoting sustainable conservation practices. The findings will support
evidence-based conservation planning and contribute to the long-term protection of
this critically endangered species in Rwanda.
