Possible New Locations of Balkan Snow Vole Species in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Martino`s snow vole is an endemic, rare and little known paleoendemic rodent species from the Western Balkans mountains. This project would serve to determine a new conservation status of the mentioned species in Bosnia and Herzegovina, based on field research and mapping of population distribution and size, applying GIS software.

The project is dealing with the problem of endemic rodent species Martinos snow vole. The aim of project will be to determine the current species population size and range in the Dinaric Alpine mountains in B&H, creation of first database (GIS) of the species population size and range and to develope themethods for successful conservation and protection of the species.

This project will be among the first in Bosnia and Herzegovina who will be dealing with the population research for conservation purposes of this species.

Project area is consisted of geographic area in Southern Bosnia and Herzegovina on high Dinaric Alpine Mountains. The field research will be done in rocky habitats, more specifically, on accumulations of rocks and boulders, on cracks in cliffs, escarpments, cave entrances, shafts and crevices in rocky substrate.
