Conservation Status for Sea Turtles Caretta caretta in Santa Luzia Island (Cabo Verde)

This project aims to implement measures that improve the nesting of turtles on the beaches of the island of Santa Luzia, from hatchery, cleaning of the nesting beaches and collecting scientific data, in addition to protection from hunting.

The natural hazards are also varied and the ghost crab on land is the worst because they prey the eggs in the nest, causing massive destruction of several thousand eggs but the destruction of nests by the effect of the tides is also devastating. To prevent this massacre are created a hatchery area where the eggs are translated and placed in a safe zone (the nests are surrounded by a net just beneath the sand), providing a very high survival rate. The constructions of these nurseries also have the advantage of being able to take biometric data on important nesting species and protect the newborns from other predators such as birds and cats. This project aims to install a hatchery on the island of St. Luzia that despite belonging to a Marine Protected Area is infested with ghost crab and cats and many of the nests are destroyed.
