Research and Conservation of Tur species (Capra caucasica and Capra cylindricornis) in Georgia
The aim of the study is to support conservation of West Caucasian Tur (Capra caucasica) in Georgia through estimating the population parameters of West Caucasian Tur within target region, promoting biodiversity awareness among local population, strengthening links between the local society and governmental entities and creating ground for establish protected area in Svanetia.
West Caucasian Tur has now been dramatically reduced because of hunting and livestock competition, as well as significant habitat loss. West Caucasian Tur habitat in Georgia remains unprotected. Capra Caucasica is classified as endangered by the IUCN and the Red List of Georgia and there is a big probability of its local extinction.
The project objectives are to:
a) estimate the population parameters (size and structure) of west Caucasian Tur within target region;
b) determine the habitats used by Capra Caucasica and to map them;
c) establish a basis for community involvement in conservation activities.
