Gede-Pangrango National Park and Cibulao Nature Reserve are important conservation areas for biodiversity protection. These areas have been designated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO and Important Bird Areas by Birdlife International. The habitats are in relatively good condition, and surveys have shown that they are on commonly used migration routes and offer roosting sites for migrating birds.
However they are adjacent to a main road between Jakarta and Bandung and the area is also densely populated. Illegal poaching, land encroachment and land conversion are all threats to species and habitat conservation. The project will monitor areas previously surveyed so as to highlight fluctuations in bird populations: this is important for area management and to provide current information for the authorities to use in setting their priorities.
The project will train local people to undertake field surveys and to compile and analyse the data for future use and will work closely with local youth organisations so as to encourage the widest possible community involvement in the long term.
