This project aims to determine the population density and distribution of the African clawless otter (Aonyx capensis), the exotic crayfish (Procambarus clarkii), and the native freshwater crab (Potamonautes neumannii) in the Ewaso Ng’iro river drainage in central Kenya.
It will examine the interaction between these three species to determine whether, and to what extent the exotic crayfish has supplanted the native crab and what effect this has had on the otter populations.
Crucially, this project will indicate how human activities (such as pollution, dam construction, increased erosion/ siltation, and water extraction) affect the aquatic fauna and tertiary consumers.
