This project will conduct the first systematic study of the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin (Sousa chinensis) in the Cat Ba Archipelago, Vietnam. Through boat-based photoidentification surveys, behavioural observations, and habitat mapping, it will generate baseline data on population size, distribution, and threats.

The project will also engage local communities and authorities through awareness campaigns and stakeholder consultations, aiming to reduce human-induced threats and build long-term conservation support. Findings will inform marine spatial planning and support the proposal of an Important Marine Mammal Area (IMMA) to ensure stronger protection for this vulnerable dolphin population.
