Community Based Conservation of Critically Endangered Nesting Sea Turtles, Habitat Restoration, Youth Environmental Education, Carriacou, Grenada, W. I.

Within and around High North National Park in Carriacou Island the project will carry out:

- Nesting Hawksbill and Leatherback turtle conservation, monitoring, rescue, tagging, data collection, disguise of turtle nests and tracks, following WIDECAST protocol procedures.

- Conservation of nesting turtles and birds habitats, through mangrove ecosystem restoration

- Youth program (age 9-14) classroom research with IT aimed at developing applicable solutions to global and local environmental challenges and conservation activities to increase island bio-diversity protection (red mangroves planting, birds and nesting turtles monitoring, beach debris cleanups and eco-puppet play and video creation to spread the conservation message).

Sea Turtle Monitoring: trained local guides and volunteers patrol the main nesting beach (Petit Carenage), monitoring hawksbills and leatherbacks. Their priority is to facilitate nesting, minimizing disturbances (lights, sounds). After eggs deposition flipper tags are applied, carapace measurements and nest location recorded and disguised along with turtle tracks (anti-poaching strategy). The teams help straggler hatchlings caught under roots in nest or stranded away from the water. On early mornings we also monitor Anse LaRoche and Sparrow Bay beaches. Nesting turtle mounds & tracks from the previous night are leveled and disguised, preventing poachers to find the eggs.

Turtle Guide Training: we give the opportunity to become Turtle Guides and Research Assistants to available and interested trainees from the region.

Youth Environmental Education & Conservation program; a solution-oriented educational team-game program, aided by ‘self-learning’ web research. Participants (9-14 years) are challenged to find practical solutions to the most pressing environmental problems locally and worldwide, along with ‘reality check’ field trips, learning hands-on about biodiversity and natural habitat conservation.

At KIDO Learning Centre, 4 Teams (4 students each team) are challenged to propose solutions for sea turtles, birds and their habitat conservation in the context of climate change, based on updated scientific information. Facilitators guide the students’ online research using iPads. Related videos are shown on a large screen using a WiFi HD projector.

The students will be involved in the creation of KIDO puppet play on Climate Change ‘Two Islands’, related to the Caribbean environment. Youths’ participation in the play will broaden their knowledge and awareness leading them to propose practical solutions to mitigate disaster related issues.

During field trips, youths will learn about wildlife identification, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem threats and restoration through:

- Bird Watching in Petit Carenage Bird Sanctuary and other locations.

- Red mangrove planting in the restoration area (Petit Carenage)

- Beach clean ups (garbage classification of debris and Sargassum seaweed collection, removing obstacles turtle hatchlings may encounter before reaching the sea)

- Night excursions to observe sea turtles nesting in Petit Carenage beach

Teachers, parents and other community members participate to these conservation activities, extending the social impact of this educational program.

Mangrove Restoration: in the Petit Carenage Wetland Sanctuary KIDO staff, volunteers, community members will plant 5.000 red mangrove propagules/saplings, some encased in bamboo segments as part of our ecosystem reforestation plan.
