Diospyros crumenata Thwaites is a Critically Endangered tree species that belongs to the Ebenaceae family and is found in the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot. There is only limited information about this tree in floristic literature and herbaria. Unfortunately, this tree is facing severe threats in its natural habitats. There are ecological, reproductive, genetic and anthropogenic reasons for its endangerment. The fruits, known as karimbudan or Karivallypazham in the local language, are safe for consumption and commonly eaten by indigenous people (Kadar community) and wildlife. Conservation of this critically endangered tree will be important for other species dependent on it and its associated habitat.

Objectives:
• Locating and mapping the populations of target species in the Western Ghats forest areas.
• Studying the threats (ecological, reproductive, genetic and anthropogenic) the target species faces in its natural habitat.
• Studying the ecosystem services (including ethnobotanical importance) of target species.
• If needed, updating the IUCN Red List assessment.
• Assessing the IUCN Green Status of target species.
• Creating a species conservation plan.
• Conducting awareness programmes with the participation of indigenous people about the importance of these endangered species and its associated habitats.
