Endangered Bat Colonies, Bulgaria

Ivan Pandourski

Conservation measures for the protection of large bat colonies in Bulgaria.

The main goal of the proposed project is to evaluate the status and number of bats in some of the largest and most endangered bat colonies in Bulgaria (usually mixed colonies of Horseshoe bat species, Myotis sp. and Miniopterus shreibersii), and to develop action plans for these species and prepare a program for the protection of important bat roosts.

The project also aims to propose recommendations to the Regional Environment Policy and the Ministry of Environment and Waters for urgent conservation measures in the most vulnerable bat colonies and to propose concrete actions for the legal protection of their roosts. Educational materials (e.g. stickers and posters) will be printed and different educational activities (e.g. lectures and photo-exhibitions) advising the non-specialist public about the role of cave-dwelling bats, their vulnerability and conservation needs will be undertaken.
