Scaling Up the Conservation of Omo River Guereza (Colobus guereza guereza) in Dense Forest, Ankober District of North Shewa Zone, Ethiopia

This project aims to estimate the population size, assess the habitat use, activity budget, feeding and ranging ecology of Omo River Guerezas and to designing management strategies.

The Omo River Guereza (Colobus guereza guereza) is an endemic subspecies of black-and-white colobus monkeys restricted to the western Rift Valley forests of Ethiopia. Little information is available on this subspecies and it remains among the least studied primates in Africa, though other subspecies of Colobus guereza have been studied for decades in other African countries. With the current increasing habitat loss and degradation across the geographic range Omo River Guereza, data on the its conservation status and behavioral ecology are very essential to designing effective management plans for this little-known primate.

This study therefore aims to provide baseline data on the population size, habitat use, feeding ecology, activity budget and ranging patterns of the Omo River Guerezas in Wof- Washa Natural Forest, in the central highlands of Ethiopia. Standard line transect methods will be used for the population assessment. This research will produce new knowledge about the space use patterns and ecological adaptations of Omo River Guereza, which will help boost conservation efforts for the subspecies. Based on this study, recommendations will be provided for the future conservation and management of this intriguing and endemic subspecies.
