This study applies a One Health approach to assess zoonotic disease risks in six villages near Kibale, where wildlife, humans and livestock interact. It will evaluate community knowledge and attitudes through surveys, document health-risk behaviors via observations and reported cases and analyze fecal samples from Eastern chimpanzees and livestock to identify antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in priority zoonotic bacteria.
The research aims to uncover community-related risk factors and AMR threats, providing evidence-based recommendations to the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Findings will support reduced zoonotic spillover, improved conservation management, enhanced public health interventions and integration of One Health principles into policy.
