Research and Protection the Moss Biodiversity on Cijevna River

Research distributed, population abundance, level of endangerment and conservation of three new (Frullania jackii Gottsche, Fissidens fontanus Steud, and Tortula modica Zander) and three endangered species (Fontinalis antipyretica Hedw., Buxbaumia viridis Moug. Ex Lam. & DC. and Necker pumila Hedw.) of moss objectives of this project. The project will be done field research which would provide information for mapping potential habitat for this species of moss. The field work will be performed on the following locations: National Park in Montenegro, such as Durmitor National Park which is on UNESCO's World HeritageList; National park Biogradska gora which is potential habitat for species Frullania jackii, Buxbaumia viridis and Necker pumila; The second part of field research would include: Canyon River Cijevna with tributaries that have the status of areas with special natural values in Montenegro; National Park Skadar Lake, which is a potential habitat for the species Tortula modica, Fissidens fontanus and Fontinalis antipyretica.

During the field research at each locality will be made fitocenological snapshot, with the aim of assessing the population size and its further monitoring. For hytocenological snapshot and vegetation description and analysis will be used method Braun-Blanque. From all the sites will be collected bryological material which will be determined in the laboratory and stored in the herbarium collection. The obtained results will be systematized and in the form of scientific publication will be published in national and international journals. Also during the research will be collected vegetative part of every moss, which will be stored in a herbarium collections: University of Montenegro, Natural Museum of Montenegro which would enable permanent preservation of the genetic material of all six species.

The second part of the project will include conservation of a species that is foreseen through the following activities: at every site where the species have been registered will be place informative boards about the importance of preserving the species and its ecosystem, in the botanical garden in Montenegro will be formed mural of these species, in order to provide better education for future visitors about the importance of these mosses; within the project will be held a series of lectures in primary, secondary schools as well as at the University of Montenegro with the aim of raising awareness and preserving the ecology of these species. The project will be presented at the largest national scientific conference "Science Days" with the aim to educate as many people. The obtained results will be used to supplement the Red List of mosses in Montenegro.
