The landscape mosaic at multiple-spatial levels has a direct relationship with the dynamics of bird assemblages. In Mexico, mangrove forests are immersed in human-modified landscapes, threatening the birds that use them as habitat. The aim is to analyze the relationships between the landscape at multiple spatial levels and the mangrove bird assemblages in the central coastal strip of Veracruz, Mexico. The landscape will be characterized by obtaining landscape metrics and local vegetation structure. Bird assemblages will be characterized by monitoring. Principal Components Analysis and Canonical Correspondence Analysis will be carried out to reveal influence of the predictor variables on bird assemblages.
The study sites are the Protected Natural Area (ANP) Arroyo Moreno in the municipalities of Boca del Río and Medellín, Veracruz (19°06´21.58´´N 96°07´04.06´´O), dominated by mangrove forest. This ANP is threatened by the urban development around it. The Mandinga Lagoon System (SLM) is in the municipality of Alvarado (19°03´08.97´´N 96° 04´44.20´´O). The SLM has three bodies of water: Laguna Larga, Laguna Chica and Laguna Grande, surrounded by mangrove forest. The characterization of the landscape taking as focal points the mangrove fragments of “Arroyo Moreno” and the SLM, will be carried out through a Geographic Information System (GIS) and Fragstats software in the period April-June 2020. This work will be done at the desk.
Bird monitoring will be carried out using the strip transect method within the mangrove fragments. The monitoring period will be from January to March 2020 and December to February 2021 with a frequency of two visits per month. Also, the characterization of the mangrove structure will be carried out using plots. The period will be in the month of September 2020 with two visits. Subsequently, the analysis of the data will be carried out in the period from February to May 2021. Finally, it is intended to make a publication in a scientific journal and a product of scientific divulgation in the year 2021.
