The aim of CERCOPAN’s research and patrol programme is to improve the protection of the primate populations within the community forests of Iko Esai, Agoi Ibami and Owai. Activities aim to achieve a reduction in incidences of hunting of endangered animals and illegal logging, and an increase in the primate population within the community forests.

CERCOPAN runs a long-term conservation programme in Southeast Nigeria, incorporating a set of integrated strategies targeted at the protection and regeneration of wildlife populations in a community forest area of 40,000 ha. These forests are contiguous to Cross River National Park, providing vital refuge for the Park´s many wildlife species. The project supported by Rufford Small Grants Foundation focuses on conservation and protection of the forest’s primate community through research, long-term population monitoring, and patrols.
