The aim of the project is to conserve and protect the Sweet Flag through organization of Mini Nursery and carrying out research on its natural growth.

None

Helad “Sweet Flag” registered in the Red Data Book of the Kyrgyz Republic grows only in Tyup rayon of Kyrgyzstan. Most of the scientists thought that Sweet Flag disappeared from the fauna of Kyrgyzstan. There is a small pond in the outskirts of Tyup village where Sweet Flag grows and is threatened due to its medicinal qualities. The root of Sweet Flag is used in modern medicine, pharmacology and traditional medicine. That is why some people sell its rhizome thus destroying its root system. They think that Sweet Flag grows all over Kyrgyzstan and do not know that it is the Red Data Book specie. To conserve and increase this helad, CBO “Kelechek”, within the framework of FFI/Bashat (CBF) Small Grants Programme, issued brochures about Sweet Flag, its conservation and medicinal qualities. Explanatory, awareness raising and consulting activities, seminars and trainings on its conservation and reproduction were conducted. This pond was taken for a long-term use by CBO “Kelechek” for creating a nursery, conducting research works and continuing to work with local people. According to the project we plan to:

None

• research and analyse the soil, ground (humus) and chemistry of water;

• determine blooming time of Sweet Flag and ways of its reproduction;

• conduct the same analysis of water in neighbouring ponds and compare analysis of soil and water to transplant Sweet Flag artificially.

Through implementation of this project the viewpoint of local people on nature will change to positive side as they will become informed and aware that this pond is conserved by the nature conserving organisations. Nobody will go and dig the root of Sweet Flag as they will know that it is the Red Data Book plant and grows only in Tyup rayon. Households are located around the pond will be more responsible for the cleanliness of their environment as they will not allow other people to throw trash seeing fenced and clean pond. There will be conditions to conduct practical lessons on biology and teach schoolchildren to be patriots on conserving and protecting nature. Other Study Groups will be set up and schoolchildren will be interested in nature by participating in surveys of scientists.
