Conservation Initiatives for Mangrove Forest/ Estuaries in Three Rivers in Marshall Proposed Protected Area, Margibi County, Liberia

S Carter Monlue

The goal of this project is to reduce the over exploitation of the mangroves forest (especially for charcoal production) at the three rivers’ basin, where poverty- striven community dwellers not engaged in alternative sources of income heavily rely on the wetlands for wood, fishes, clamps, etc.

Fishing is one of the key livelihood activities of people in Marshall City.

Fishing is one of the key livelihood activities of people in Marshall City.

The mangroves and the estuaries are breeding grounds for most marine life, hence the conservation of the areas will provide continuous mean of reproduction of marine life which otherwise could suffer reduction in their population as Liberia is a country which is heavily dependent on wild meat including fish and other marine life as principal source of protein. Building the capacity of community dwellers will shift their activities from gathering to production oriented initiatives which will ultimately reduce the degradation of the biodiversity of the mangrove forest.
