Survey and Conservation of Milky Stork Mycteria cinerea in the East Coastal of Sumatra Island, Indonesia

This project will be a comprehensive survey for assess bird diversity & provide information on its important habitat in Bangka Island.

The project “Survey and conservation of bird diversity in Bangka Island, Sumatra, Indonesia” will serve a basic data to give information on diversity, recent population, status, distribution, movements, condition of remaining habitats, breeding sites, threats and other aspects on birds in Bangka Island.

The idea for carrying out this work came when author collecting information on possibility habitats of Silvery pigeon Columba argentina in Sumatra (Iqbal 2010). From recent references of ornithology, it is clear that there is no ornithological work after Mees (1986) in Bangka Island compared than other Islands in Sumatra. Results from this project will give scientific recommendations for immediate conservation action to ensure the survival of birds and its remaining habitat in Bangka Island, Sumatra, Indonesia. Conservation awareness among local people will be conducted during surveys and 1000 posters-calendars will also distribute during survey period.

This project will also provide excellent opportunities to develop young scientists and conservationists from Bangka Island to develop their career in conservation.
