Conservation of Threatened and Endangered Species of Gymnosperm in Northwest Vietnam

This project will be conducted gymnosperm field study and to implement gymnosperm conservation action at Cuc Phuong National Park.

Cuc Phuong National Park, a hilly, forested limestone landscape located about 120 km southwest of Hanoi, at the boundary intersection of three provinces: Hoa Binh to the northwest, Thanh Hoa to the south and southwest, and Ninh Binh to the east. The geographic location is between 105029' E to 105044' E longitude and between 20014' N and 20024' N latitude.

Cuc Phuong National Park (CPNP) harbors 6 species of gymnosperms listed in the 2007 IUCN Red List CPNP. These gymnosperm species represent a high priority in the conservation agenda of CPNP. Thus the protection and long-term conservation measures at CPNP need to be implemented for the following gymnosperm species: Cycas hoabinhensis (EN A4c), Cycas dolichophylla (VU A2c and Listed on CITES Appendix II), Cycas sexseminifera (LR nt), Cycas balansae (NT) Podocarpus neriifolius (LR/lc) and Nageia fleuryi (NT). However, for each of these, there is very limited information on their ecology, habitat, detailed distribution range, and population size within CPNP. The project proposes to fill this gap. The proposed research will also initiate in situ and ex situ conservation programs in cooperation with conservation managers and the ethnic Muong minority peoples. The team will collect and germinate seeds and cuttings to determine their cultivation requirements, and to establish ex situ living collection. The team also proposes to raise local people’s awareness on the need for the protection and conservation of threatened and endangered gymnosperm species.

My proposal project will be conducted gymnosperm field study and to implement gymnosperm conservation action at Cuc Phuong National Park. To prepare conservation profiles including detailed distribution maps of species: identify their specific, habitat, location, population size.

1. To study regeneration through a 50 x 20 m plot method, and to compile a database on ecological parameters of each species.

2. To observe and record phenology (following flowering and fruiting dates) of each species as much as possible in different populations.

3. To Initiate ex situ conservation program of threatened and endangered gymnosperm species in cooperation with protected area managers and local communities.

4. To build a living gene bank of gymnosperm species in Cuc Phuong National Park through seed and cutting propagation experiments in Cuc Phuong nursery.

5. To establish Threatened and Endangered gymnosperms conservation zones, and to involve local people, students and volunteers as active participants in the project.
