The black vulture is an endangered species included in IUCN Red List. The project is aimed at saving this bird in its main wintering place in southern Primorye.
A winter 1985/86 survey found 600-650 birds. The last few years have seen the numbers decimated. Nowadays the vultures' population is limited to 300 birds. The reasons for the decline are lack of food, poaching and persecution by local population.
