Distribution and Vulnerability of Highly Endangered Karst Viper in Central and North Part of Montenegro, and Preparing for Long-Term Monitoring

Our aim is to confirm presence of Karst viper on coastal mountains Orjen, Lovcen, Rumija and define threatening factors to those populations and habitats.

Karst viper (Vipera ursinii macrops) is viper from the family Viperide. This is also the less researched viper in Montenegro. It inhabits high mountain grasslands, what tells about the sensitivity of species to changes. It`s similar to the common European adder and horned viper, why people often kill them because of their prejudice. In Montenegro, habitat of this species is under great pressure and it`s changing a lot because of unplanned urbanization of high mountain grasslands, fires, overgrowing of grasslands in lack of livestock breeding. Also, this species in Montenegro is not on the list of species protected by law, and in this moment there are no conditions of it protection. From this reasons we decided to make a research on Karst viper, its distribution, habitats, and recognizing threats to this species, then we can start further research and making management plan of high mountain areas. This project will be opening research of distribution of this species in Montenegro, and later we will expand research on central and north part of the Montenegro, including population studies.
