The In-Situ and Ex-Situ Conservation Measures for the Endemic Lizards Eremias arguta transcaucasica

The project aim is develop and implementation the plan of conservation actions for saving the unique single population of racerunner Eremias arguta transcaucasica.

The isolated unique population of Eremias arguta transcaucasica on shore of Sevan Lake, Gegharkunik Province, Armenia are under strong human pressure and call to urgent conservation measures. The previous surveys of the population have revealed that this species in Armenia occupy very restricted territory and are on edge of extinction. The main threats to the survival of this species are habitat destruction and pollution because of negative influence of the village and agriculture.

The main goals of proposed project are implementation of following conservation activities:

1. Raising public awareness and implementation of environmental educational programs among local people;

2. Research the microhabitat preference of lizards and monitoring of the existing wild population;

3. Surveys of the adjoining territories, searching for areas with suitable habitat and climatic conditions for the eventual translocation of lizards;

4. Preparation of a detailed description of the procedures and methods which will be used for the translocation of young lizards from agricultural fields where they have insufficient conditions of hibernation to new protected territories supplied by analysis of risk;

5. Capacity building program which will train the young specialists in modern approaches and methods of conservation of rich biodiversity of Armenia.

The cooperative actions of expert herpetologists, conservation biologists, non-governmental organizations, together with governmental institution and general public awareness planned. The updated database of habitat quality and abundance of lizards, plan of translocation, established cooperation with EU herpetologists and conservationists and our practices will be for the base to develop the next steps of the conservation plan of Eremias arguta transcaucasia.
