Sundarvan’s Snake Awareness for Schools at Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India

Snakes remain one of the most misunderstood animals. Through this project, we create awareness on snakes to children of government or government aided schools and to create a cadre of teachers to create continuous reptile awareness in schools.

The government schools around Sundarvan are invited to visit our facility. Minimum of 30 schools are targeted to visit Sundarvan in a year. The snake awareness programme and activities will be conducted for these students. The schools located far from Sundarvan are approached to conduct programme in their campus. Our education team will visit schools regularly with teaching aids and touch table specimens, audio-visual equipments and resource materials to carry out activities. Fifty schools will be visited during the project period to conduct activities.

One day orientation workshop will be conducted for teachers from government schools. Two such workshops will be carried out in a year to orient 60 teachers, 30 in each batch. The workshop will cover topics such as introduction on reptiles, snakes, conservation issues, activities to take this conservation message to students, etc. The resource materials such as posters, booklet and activity manual will be supplied to all the participants free of cost. The following are the expected outcome of this project:

1. Sundarvan will reach out about 80 schools, 7000 students and 400 teachers in the city of Ahmedabad. Reaching above number will cover about 15% of the municipal corporation schools (n=539), 3.5% of the students (n=1,87,115) and 7.7% of the teachers (n=4,785) of the Ahmedabad city, which otherwise not reached at all.

2. Exhibition of snake photographs and facts about bite, first aid, treatment, myths, role of snakes in the environment and conservation issues will help us to reach people from different walk.

3. A booklet on Snakes in both the local language, Gujarati and English will be developed covering various topics to create awareness and propogate the need to conserve these species.

4. Posters on commonly found venomous and some non-venomous snakes of India available with Sundarvan will be distributed to schools that take part in this programme.

5. The local print and broadcasting media will be collaborated to spread the awareness message to as many as people as possible.
