ReSurge Africa is introducing reconstructive plastic surgery to West Africa. The sub-region's first self sufficient service has been established in Ghana and our activities were recently extended to Sierra Leone where the medical situation is apocalyptic.
Reconstructive surgery can minimise the deformity and disability that sets in as a result of burns, accidents, congenital deformity, conflict and tropical diseases. ReSurge Africa's main function is to train African doctors, nurses, therapists and anaesthetists as well as provide equipment. The reconstructive surgery unit in Ghana is serving as the hub for extending similar services throughout West Africa. Its first trainee is a Sierra Leonean doctor who will become that country's first plastic surgeon. The Rufford Foundation is contributing to his training.
