In 2007/08, Earthwatch Institute (Europe) received a grant of £30,000 from The Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation for their African training programme, Developing a New Generation of Conservation Scientists.
The aim of the programme is to train early-career conservation scientists in field research techniques, leadership, and team management skills in order to increase their capacity to contribute to international conservation research, especially through roles on Earthwatch scientific field research projects. Including the 2007/08 grant, twenty conservation scientists have received training through Earthwatch as a result of Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation grant funding.
In 2007/08, Earthwatch selected five early-career conservation scientists from Ghana, Kenya, Sri Lanka and the Seychelles and developed for each a bespoke training programme based on their needs. Three of the selected scientists were also placed on Earthwatch research projects in Kenya, Sri Lanka, and South Africa to gain experience of how to manage field research projects.
