The Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation provided a grant of £10,000 in 2007/08.
Changing Faces supports and represents people with facial or other disfigurements from any cause – at least 540,000 people in Britain.
Core funding is very difficult to generate. The Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation’s generous donation in 2007/08 has helped to support our achievements during our 15th anniversary year.
Here are the three main programmes, with highlights from the year:
Individuals – support for individuals of all ages, and their families, with counselling, social skills advice, workshops, support in school, resources for teachers, and self help guides.
o Our first Harry Potter©-themed, social skills workshop for children with disfigurements (aged 7-11) - broomsticks, owls and snitches everywhere!
o Launch of our brand new website, designed by and for young people – http://www.iface.org.uk
o Introduction of an ‘intimacy’ workshop dealing with sensitive relationship issues.
Professionals (in the NHS, teachers, employers) – awareness raising, training courses and policy influence.
o Acting as a Catalyst for Change meeting the increasing demand from health professionals for training in psycho-social support.
o Representing the interests of people with facial disfigurements in the ongoing debate on face transplantation.
o Convening an expert advisory seminar to explore making our services more appropriate and accessible for people in the Black Asian and Ethnic Minority communities.
Society – communicating the work of the charity and campaigning to change attitudes.
o Publication of a ground-breaking leaflet, for the first time offering tips on becoming ‘disfigurement confident’ http://admin.changingfaces.org.uk/downloads/cfleaflet07.pdf
o Developing a campaign, launched in May 2008, with the call - Stand out. Show your support for face equality.
