The Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation provided a grant of £100,800 in 2007/08 to support a number of projects.
TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network, is a joint programme of IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and WWF, the global conservation organization. The Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation has been a key supporter of innovation and achievement in TRAFFIC’s programme for more than 10 years.
The funds supported several of TRAFFIC’s key global programmatic areas, including continued support for global fisheries trade work. They also contributed towards a wide variety of regional projects, including research into market trade trends in medicinal plants, changing patterns in the unsustainable consumption of wildlife in China, enhancing intelligence tools in Southeast Asia and the development of a two-year plan identifying priorities and agreed targets for ensuring long-term training of Russian Customs Officers in CITES matters.
The Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation also provided support for TRAFFIC communications activities including the TRAFFIC Bulletin —the only journal devoted exclusively to wildlife trade issues worldwide—and supported the publication of timely, high-quality research which directly underpins delivery of TRAFFIC’s conservation targets to those in a position to act for conservation gain and provides the evidence needed to support public messaging, advocacy and policy advice.
